OAKS (oh-kzz) n. The term "oak" can be used as part of a common name formed from members of the Tight Bros From Way Back When, Spermatozoa, and Flocking Eduardo. This genus is native to the Northern hemisphere, and includes species extending from the cold latitudes of Olympia, WA and Long Island, NY. Oaks is a indie rock duo from Minneapolis,MN. The band consists of Erica Krumm and Jim Kolles. They released their debut self-titled EP on August 11,2011 featuring the lead track ''Feathers''. In the strange Olympic summer of 1972, the Düsseldorf instrumental group (community of 5 hippies / open mind artists) German Oak entered the Luftschutzbunker (or Air Raid Shelter), in order to record their first self-titled LP. The purpose of recording in a bunker was to recreate the feelings experienced by German soldiers during the Allied invasion of 1944. The strange acoustic conditions in the bunker made the music, which was a series of long, spacious guitar jams, sound distant and filled with echo. In late 2003, just two years after 9/11, The OaKs's Ryan Costello sold everything he owned, joined a humanitarian organization and moved to Afghanistan. Costello lived there for two years, working in the Central Afghan mountains with returned refugees, teaching them creative agricultural techniques and becoming fluent in their native language, Farsi. Late at night, while the dust storms blocked out the stars and rattled the windows, he would sit and work out impressions of what he had seen and heard that day on his acoustic guitar. Oakley Hall started as a project centered around guitarist/vocalist Patrick Sullivan (formerly known as Papa Crazy or PCRZ of Oneida). The lineup changed significantly after the recording of the first full-length album, but has since stabilized with Sullivan on guitar, vocals, and Hammond, Rachel Cox on guitar and vocals, drummer Greg Anderson, bass/supporting vocals from Jesse Barnes, Claudia Mogel on fiddle and backup vocals, and Fred Wallace on lap steel, banjo, and guitar. Their most recent release, Gypsum Strings is their third full length, and their second with the above lineup. .
