Punk N Roll | en

Punk n’ Roll (alternatively referred to as Punk Rock n’ Roll) is a term used to describe bands who mix traditional hard rock with punk rock. Arguably, Guns N’ Roses and Social Distortion are two of the main influences of the style, both having influenced many punk n’ roll bands, including Backyard Babies, Bullets and Octane, and The Chelsea Smiles.

The genre began to truly form in the early 90’s but many bands experimented with mixing punk rock into a traditional rock n’ roll format prior to then. Common characteristics of the punk n’ roll sound are traditional rock n’ roll songs played with the three chord crunch and speed of punk rock. Guitar solo’s are common in the music and lyrical subjects generally focus on sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll.

The genre is not geographically isolated and has bands hailing from all over the world, such as Sweden’s Backyard Babies, Canada’s Kill Cheerleader, Georgia’s The Heart Attacks, and Norway’s Turbonegro. The style is relatively underground with few artists gaining much success. The style tends to be more popular in Europe and Canada than in the United States.
