Death/doom (or doom/death) is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal. It combines the slow tempos and pessimistic or depressive mood of doom metal with the deep growling vocals and double kick drumming of death metal. The genre emerged in the late 1980s and gained a certain amount of popularity during the 1990s, but had become less common by the turn of the century.

Stylistically, the first bands to combine these elements were Dream Death, Sempiternal Deathreign, Delirium, Asphyx, Necro Schizma, Disembowlement and Winter

The subgenre achieved widespread notice in the early to mid nineties through the bands Anathema, My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost (collectively known as the Peaceville Three, as all three bands were signed to the Peaceville label during the height of their death/doom metal output). .
