In late 2003, just two years after 9/11, The OaKs's Ryan Costello sold everything he owned, joined a humanitarian organization and moved to Afghanistan. Costello lived there for two years, working in the Central Afghan mountains with returned refugees, teaching them creative agricultural techniques and becoming fluent in their native language, Farsi. Twin Oaks is a Los Angeles-based band formed by Lauren Brown and Aaron Domingo. Spending their early days as a bedroom folk act in 2011, Twin Oaks began as an acoustic outlet for Aaron before pitching his songs to Lauren to sing as backing vocalist. Brown's vocals began to better suit the songs and singing roles switched, allowing Domingo to focus primarily on instrumentation.
