Born in 1990, Emmy Curl has what creative minds of all ages aspire to: a universe of her own, perfectly drawn and filled with sound and image. Last November, the singer and songwriter from the Northern region of Portugal, born in the city of Vila Real as Catarina Miranda, released her third EP, “Origins”.
Raised within an artistic family, Emmy Curl feeds her dreamy and colorful music with a passion for other areas such as photography, art and fashion (she created a sewing workshop, which helps her fund her growing passion for recording). All of these activities are part of a rich curriculum whose main goal is to try harder and do better. It’s onstage that Emmy Curl combines all her vocations, enriching her live act with the experience of performing with Rouge, a theatrical band from Aveiro, where she currently lives.
Blessed with a careful image and singular imaginary, Emmy Curl likes to take control at every stage of the recording, from production to graphic work, and has had a growing but intense impact on the public: on Youtube, there’s an increasing number of covers of her songs, made by her fans. And Emmy Curl herself isn’t shy from walking on the fans shoes, having signed notable versions from songs such as “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song”, by Fleet Foxes, and “Cayman Islands”, originally written by Kings Of Convenience.
Andrew Bird, Little Dragon, Zero 7, Goldfrapp, José González and Jorge Palma are among the artists Emmy Curl likes to listen to, and whose influence often shows, in her scented and steamy songs.
In her new EP, “Origins”, Emmy promises to keep the musical personality that she has been displaying, while at the same time trying to take the songs through new and adventurous ways. André Tentugal (from Portuguese band We Trust) is a guest on the second chapter of her work. As her fellow countryman, writer Miguel Torga said, in a quote cited in some interviews to promote the debut EP, “sometimes I call it a curse, a mixture of spell and prayer”. .
