A New Dae has come…

Women have always been a strong presence in the world of reggae music, although not as widely known as their male counterparts. The Caribbean has produced legendary Empresses in the likes of Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffith and Sister Carol. But the place of women in the Reggae scene has dramatically shifted to a more prominent one, and Sistah Joyce is at the forefront of this movement. Armed with a uniquely mellow voice, powerful lyrics and the strength of her faith in Rastafari, she has conquered a wide audience and established herself as a successful and respected artist.

With a Christian background, Sistah Joyce began singing at the age of five in her church choir, which instilled in her a great love for music. Originally from the enchanting island of Chocolate City, Tortola, it was in the Virgin Gorda that she started her professional career, later settling in St. Croix, USVI.

For the past twelve years she has been performing throughout the US and the Caribbean, opening for world renowned artists such as Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, Toots & the Maytals, Sizzla, Luciano, Buju Banton, Marcia Griffith and Midnite, among others.

In 2003 she released her first single, entitled “Haile Africa”, produced by Marcus “Young Blood” Mark of A.N.O.A. Studios in Virgin Gorda, followed by the #1 hit song “Give Jah the Praises”, produced and recorded by S.P.M. Records in St. Croix. Her first full length album, “H.Y.P.O.C.R.I.C.Y.”, was released in July 2004, receiving excellent reviews. In 2005 she released another album, “New Dae”, produced and recorded by Ras L of Deep Hytes Studios in St. Croix. Her latest album, “Freedom Sitee”, is due for release by Natural Vibes, LLC / Het-Heru Entertainment in August 1st 2006.

In these days many artists who trod in the light of Rastafari are forsaking their teachings in order to become more “commercial”, but the masses are becoming more and more drawn to the positive and serious social comments ever present in Roots Reggae, the foundation. With all of her vocal power, enlightening and uplifting words and incredible rhythms, Sistah Joyce, the Gifted Empress, is indeed one of Roots Reggae’s most promising singers, and a force to be reckoned with.
