The very definition of “cult favorites,” the Chrysanthemums (known since the mid-’90s as Chrys&themums) are the sort of group who inspire loyalty among a small band of admirers while remaining entirely below the radar of the public at large. Their music, a mixture of British Invasion-inspired pop, experimental eccentricity, and psychedelic flourishes, is just slightly too odd for wide mainstream acceptance, but few bands walk the knife’s edge between accessibility and impenetrability so well. Los Angeles based producer Todd Mumford, aka Mum's the Word started his path in music during his days as a DJ at KCSB, the campus radio station at UC Santa Barbara. Drunk Mums formed in Cairns, Australia about five years ago, in a microwave, early blues being the meat, tied down by some ranty garage cling wrap. They held Blood and Guts parties, helping unknown young bands get started as there was nowhere else to do so. Everyone lived in a battered old Queenslander which eventually burnt down, and as instead of work, played a residency at the infamous Johno's Blues Bar before its demise. When five South Auckland teens got together in 1998 to enter the YFC Capital Teen Convention, none of them had any clue that they would be playing to over 25,000 people on Mainstage at Parachute Festival. Also None of them thought they would be touring the US and playing at the Cornerstone Festival. But these five, now well out of their teens play a brand of pop-punk that many kids around New Zealand adore .
