In 2000, Alex Sharkey formally of Brighter fame decided to change direction. The result was Pinkie, basically a one-man band featuring Sharkey, but also with some help from former bandmate Keris Howard. In Sharkey's own words: "As time went on I started to realise what was and wasn’t important. I felt inspired to write songs that I could immerse myself in, that I knew had a right to exist. CBB is Lindsay Powell, a multi-instrumental singer-songwriter from Millstone Township, New Jersey. Her other musical projects include Festival (with her sister Lex on Language of Stone Records) and Skyblazer (with the boys of JEFF on Infinity Cat Recordings). Brick Layer Cake is the musical project of Todd Trainer. Trainer is a well known drummer for bands such as Rifle Sport, Breaking Circus and Shellac. For Brick Layer Cake, Trainer plays every instrument, and sings in a deep speech-like monotone. The music of Brick Layer Cake is characteristically very slow in tempo, to the point of being called "drone-like". As Steve Albini described it: 'Think of Nick Drake on downers fronting Black Sabbath, if Black Sabbath played only the good parts of their songs'. .
