Yma Sumac (September 13, 1922 – November 1, 2008) was the stage name of a Peruvian singer named Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo. When still a child in rural Peru, she attracted notice for her extraordinary voice, and joined the Compañía Peruana de Arte in the early 1940s. Yma Súmac was born in Ichocán, Cajamarca, Peru. Other dates mentioned in her various biographies range from 1921 to 1929. After her many releases with her band The Sumacs she has now formed her new project ‘Electric Butterfly’ which is a collaboration with producer Colin Elliot (long-time producer and arranger with Richard Hawley). ‘Electric Butterfly’ has been released as a digital download on iTunes and is a truly beautiful piece of work. The short-lived Los Angeles quintet Sumack never got past the well-deserved comparisons to Beck's Mellow Gold-through-Odelay period that tended to show up in reviews of their two albums. That said, their blend of alternative rock, folk-pop, '70s-style new wave, hip-hop, and electronica is usually entertaining and occasionally terrific.
