Death doom metal (also referred to as death/doom or doom/death) is a subgenre of doom metal. It mixes the slow, sombre sound of doom metal with elements of death metal, such as growled vocals and double kick drumming. Stylistically, the first band to combine these elements was Dream Death, followed shortly by the more death metal-oriented bands Sempiternal Deathreign, Delirium, Asphyx, Disembowelment, Winter and Autopsy.
The subgenre achieved widespread notice in the early to mid nineties through the bands Anathema, My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost (collectively known as the Peaceville Three, as all three bands were signed to the Peaceville label during the height of their death/doom metal output). .
