Based music is an avant-garde sub-genre of rap music originating from the Bay Area of California. It is characterized its unique lyrics, beat selection, and subject matter. Artists engage in what is called "based freestyling" , a stream of consciousness style of rapping in which the rapper says literally anything that comes to his/her mind. Lines like "hoes on my dick 'cause I look like [insert random pop culture figure here]" are very common. Berkley rapper Lil B the Based God is the main pioneer of this genre. .
