The second wave of emo (mid-'90s onwards) was a mixture of hardcore's passion and indie rock's intelligence. It bore the anthemic power and DIY ethic of punk rock, but with smoother songs, sloppier melodies, and yearning vocals. Midwest Emo is a term used to describe the most recent evolution in the emo genre, with poppier vocals and clean guitar melodies. Many of the bands making this music were from the midwestern and central United States, giving rise to the term "Midwest emo". Influential and popular bands from this time include Mineral, Braid, The Promise Ring, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Cap'n Jazz, American Football and Christie Front Drive. .
