Ustad is an Arabic term that means "Master Musician". The term used to only refer to the early musicians from India that came to Afghanistan. The Afghan government (before the take over of the Taliban) would only give the title to musicians that they deemed great from Afghanistan. Such noatable Ustads are Ahmad Zahir and Freida Mahwash.
